Learning to Fly the GEN H-4

Pilot: Jon Plummer learned to fly the GEN H-4 in less than two hours.

The essentials to learning to fly the GEN H-4 was learning to feel the helicopter and how it responded to slight movements of the control bar. While learning the controls I left my own feet on the ground while the helicopter was in the in air and practiced the throttle and movement controls.

After 28 minutes of flight time I completely left the ground for the first time. What an awesome feeling to hover in the air under my own control!

As my flight practice continued and my courage increased I ascended a little higher each flight. As a new pilot and not having a cage or aircraft body

around me of any type, my limiting factor then became my own fear of heights! Because of Japan's strict regulations I was not allowed to leave the company property in which I flew therefore I practiced a lot of hovering, yaw control, and slight movements in various directions.

I found it quite amazing how small people became only being a few feet off the ground!  After only two hours of practice in the GEN H-4 I felt comfortable enough to hang in the air, rotate around using the yaw control, and move to a desired position. From then on my dream became to fly in the United States where the strict laws in Japan would not apply. As an ultra-light air craft the GEN H-4 can be flown without a pilot's license in the United States. Now of course there are still laws governing what you can and cannot do, but they are much easier to deal with than those in Europe and Japan.
